Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card Review: A Go-To For Anyone New to Points

When people ask me for the best starter credit card, I often recommend the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. Between its earn rate and simple redemption options, it’s a great choice for people who want to earn more miles without dealing with the hassles that accompany most credit rewards: Blackout dates, complex redemption rules, and little guidance on how to actually redeem miles.

Venture cardholders can choose between redeeming miles at a flat rate towards any travel expense, or transferring them to 19 travel rewards partners for greater value. The card’s substantial welcome bonus is worth at least $1,000 but can go even further through transfer partner redemptions. The card also offers some usefull travel perks in exchange for a reasonable $95 annual fee.

If you’re a travel enthusiast or looking for an easy entry into points and miles, the Capital One Venture Card should be on your radar:

Overview

The Capital One Venture Card is straightforward, which is why I’ve held on to it for nearly five years. While the welcome bonus is a great start, I’ve managed to replenish my account balance easily, thanks to its 2X earn rate on all purchases.

Redeeming points is also easy, with the ability to use them towards travel expenses at 1 cent each or maximize them via transfer partners.

Keeping this card every year is an easy decision for me, thanks to the ongoing perks and rewards. This is one of the few cards you’ll find with a $95 annual fee that offers a $120 Global Entry or TSA Precheck application fee credit every four years. Normally this perk is available on premium cards with annual fees ranging from $400-$600.

Capital One Venture rewards, bonuses, and perks

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card’s most notable feature is its simple rewards structure and ongoing perks. Cardholders earn a flat 2X rewards on all purchases, plus 5X on hotels, rental cars, and vacation rentals booked through the Capital One Travel portal.

The card’s travel perks and protections can give you peace of mind whether you’re traveling abroad or taking a staycation. Here’s a closer look at the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card’s rewards, bonuses, and perks:

Sign-up bonus (4.0/5.0)

The Capital One Venture Card’s welcome bonus offers 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening, plus a $250 Capital One Travel credit. This welcome bonus is worth at least $1,000  toward travel expenses.

You can get even more value from this bonus by transferring rewards to one of Capital One’s 19 airline and hotel transfer partners. When I earned my welcome bonus, I used the points for a one-way business class ticket to Istanbul by transfers 50,000 miles to Turkish Miles&Smiles. With the remaining 30,000 miles, I covered a return flight in economy class. In total, I easily got at least $3,000 in value from my Venture card welcome bonus. Plus, my travel experience was so much more comfortable since I got to fly there in business class.

The card’s $250 travel statement credi adds tremendous value to the current welcome bonus. Cardholders can use the credit towards Capital One Travel bookings, which include hotels, airfare, and rental cars. Being able to knock $250 off your next hotel booking is incredible, considering the Venture Card’s annual fee is just $95.

Rewards program (4.0/5.0)

The Capital One Venture Card offer a versatile rewards program. Cardholders can redeem their miles towards travel bookings at a rate of one cent each, which is ideal for those who want simplicity from their rewards programs.

All you have to do is make a travel purchase (flights, hotels, cruises, etc.), then “erase” it using miles for a statement credit. You can also redeem Capital One miles directly towards bookings made on the Capital One Travel site. Miles are worth one cent each if you decide to go this route.

Capital One current has 16 airline and three hotel partners you can transfer Capital One miles to at a 1:1 ratio. Doing so can be massively beneficial, allowing you to redeem your miles for high-value travel experiences.

For example, you could redeem 120,000 Capital One miles for a $1,200 business class ticket to Hawaii on United Airlines. Alternately, you can transfer miles to Turkish Miles&Smiles and redeem just 30,000 miles for the same flight. By leveraging Capital One’s transfer partnership, you’d save 75% on the cost of an award ticket in this scenario.

Redemptions for non-travel purchases are possible, but won’t provide the best value. You’ll get about 0.5 cents per mile if you decide on this option.

Transfer partners (4/5.0)

Capital One currently has 19 transfer partners in total: Three hotel loyalty programs and 16 airline frequent flyer programs. Your miles transfer 1:1 to most programs (unless noted otherwise), and in many cases, miles transfer instantly.

  • Accor Live Limitless (2:1)
  • Aeromexico Club Premier
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Choice Privileges
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • Eva Air Infinity MileageLands (2:1.5)
  • Finnair Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue (5:3)
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • TAP Miles&Go
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • Wyndham Rewards

Some of the best transfer partners include Air Canada Aeroplan, Flying Blue, and Wyndham Rewards. These programs offer low redemption rates for travel within the U.S. or abroad. For example, you can redeem just 10,000 Turkish miles for a one-way economy class ticket to Hawaii. Economy fares to the UK start at just 10,000 miles through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club – one of the best award ticket deals around.

Sometimes, Capital One offers transfer bonuses to select partners, making award redemptions even more attainable.

Additional benefits (3.5/5.0)

The Venture Card offers useful benefits that can improve your travel experience and stretch your budget further. The travel protections are a nice bonus, providing peace of mind when booking flights and rental cars.

  • Trusted traveler application fee credit: Receive up to $120 towards Global Entry or TSA Precheck application fees every four years. You’re best off using your credit for Global Entry, since approval includes enrollment in TSA Precheck.
  • Lifestyle Collection credit: Includes extra perks at over 100 select hotels and vacation rentals. Benefits include a $50 experience credit, room upgrades, early check-in, and late check-out.
  • Hertz Five Star status: Get instant Hertz elite status, which includes 25% bonus points and vehicle upgrades.
  • Capital One Entertainment: Get access to exclusive event tickets. In the past, this has included pre-sale access to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
  • No foreign transaction fees: Some cards charge a 3% fee on transactions originating abroad, which is waived with your Venture card.
  • Travel accident insurance: Includes up to $250,000 in coverage against accidental loss of life, limb, speech, or hearing.
  • Rental collision waiver: Covers up to the cash value of a rental vehicle in case of theft or damage.
  • Capital One Cafe discount: Receive 50% off drinks at Capital One Cafe locations when paying with your Venture card.

I routinely get outsized value from these benefits, regardless of whether I’m traveling or staying home. I’ve saved hundreds of dollars thanks to the 50% Capital One Cafe discount alone. And while I’ll gladly pay the $120 Global Entry fee for the massive amount of time it saves me at customs, getting it waived by Capital One was a nice bonus.

Do you qualify?

To qualify for the Capital One Venture Rewards Card, you’ll need an excellent credit score, which is generally defined as 780 or higher. A credit approval isn’t entirely based on your score–Capital One also takes other factors into consideration when evaluating your application, including your income and existing relationship with the bank.

The first time I applied for the card, I was rejected with a 770 credit score. It wasn’t until I set up a Capital One checking account two years later that I was finally approved.

Here are some factors that can impact your eligibility:

  • Welcome bonus eligibility: You likely won’t be approved for a Venture card if you’ve received the welcome bonus in the past 48 months.
  • Past applications: According to cardmember reports, Capital One generally won’t approve more than one credit card application every six months. So if you’ve applied for another Capital One card recently, you may not qualify for a Venture card.
  • Multiple credit pulls: Most banks will pull your credit report from one bureau, but Capital One pulls all three. If there is a credit freeze or negative mark on one of your reports, it could impact your eligibility and approval.

The best way to determine if you qualify for the card is by using Capital One’s pre-approval tool. Capital One will conduct a “soft” credit inquiry to determine your eligibility, which won’t impact your credit score.

The application process

Before applying for a Capital One Venture Card, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the Capital One application rules. Doing so ensures you don’t waste a credit inquiry on an application that will likely get rejected.

Applying for the Capital One Venture Rewards Card is fairly straightforward. Once you land on the credit card application page, and follow these steps:

Step 1: You can either select “see if I’m pre-approved” or “Apply now.” A pre-approval involves a soft credit inquiry, so we recommend doing that first. However, if you’re confident in your chances of being approved, you can skip straight to the application.

Step 2: If you already have a Capital One account, click on the “prefill application” link. This will speed up the process and avoid critical errors (like misspelling your name or providing the wrong address). Doing this also ensures that if you are approved, your new card is automatically linked to your Capital One account.

If you’re not an existing Capital One customer, simply fill out the form. You’ll need a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). When you’ve filled out your personal information, you can review the legal disclosures at the bottom of the page and select “continue.”

Step 3: Provide your address, email, and phone number. Note, you can’t use a P.O. box as your address.

Step 4: Provide your employment, monthly housing, and annual income information. You’ll also need to specify whether you have a checking or savings account (with any bank). There’s also an optional question about whether you plan on using the card for cash advance transactions.

Step 5: On this final step, you can add an authorized user if you want. There’s no fee for doing so, and the authorized user’s spending will count towards the card’s welcome bonus spending requirement. You’ll be responsible for any purchases they charge to the card, so choose someone trustworthy.

You’ll need to provide the authorized user’s name, date of birth, phone number, and social security number. If approved, their card will be mailed to your address.

Step 6: Review all of the information you provided during the application and ensure it’s accurate. You can click the grey “Back” button or select the “edit” link to update any inaccurate information. Once everything is accurate, select “continue.”

SCREENSHOT 5

You may get a response instantly, or you’ll get a message stating that Capital One needs more time to review your application. If your application is rejected or pending, you might want to call Capital One to inquire about the reason. Sometimes errors in your application can cause rejections or delays. Addressing these issues can lead to an approval or expedite the decision process.

Pros and Cons

While the Capital One Venture Rewards Card provides excellent value, it also has a few drawbacks. When deciding whether the card is a good fit for you, it’s important to weigh the pros against the cons:

Pros

  • Generous welcome bonus: The Venture Card’s welcome bonus is a major advantage, providing a combined $1,000 in value for just a $95 annual fee. If you redeem the 75,000 bonus miles strategically via transfer partners, you can get significantly more than $750 in value. The limited-time $250 Capital One Travel credit is a great way to cover the cost of a flight, hotel, or rental car.
  • Simple rewards structure: Some cards have multiple category bonuses (some of which are capped), but the Capital One Venture earns a flat 2 miles per dollar spent on everything. This is ideal for people who want one card for all of their spending, without being limited in how much they can earn.
  • Flexible redemption options: This card offers flexible redemption options. Whether you decide to maximize your rewards through transfer partners or opt for the simpler “purchase eraser” route, redeeming miles for travel is as simple and straightforward as you want it to be.
  • Recurring travel perks: The card’s recurring travel perks make it possible to recoup the $95 annual fee. In addition to the $120 trusted travel program credit, cardholders enjoy waived foreign transaction fees, Hertz Five Star status, and exclusive perks when booking hotels through the Lifestyles Collection.

Cons

  • Three credit pulls: While most banks pull your credit from just one credit bureau, Capital One notoriously pulls your credit from all three bureaus.
  • $95 annual fee: The card’s $95 annual fee may not be ideal for those who can’t maximize the card’s benefits.
  • Lack of category bonuses: Some consumers will take issue with earning a flat 2X miles on nearly all spending. If your spending habits center around travel, dining, and groceries, the Venture Card may not be the best card for maximizing those purchases.
  • Few domestic airline transfer partners: The Capital One miles program has just one domestic transfer partner (JetBlue TrueBlue), with the rest being international programs. While these programs partner with U.S.-based airlines (i.e., Turkish Miles&Smiles is a United Airlines partner), navigating these programs may be confusing to Americans who are unfamiliar with them.

Who I think should consider this card

The Capital One Venture Card is an incredibly versatile card, thanks to its generous rewards and simple redemption options. While virtually anyone interested in credit card rewards will appreciate this card, there are three specific consumer types who should consider adding it to their wallets:

Frequent travelers

The Capital One Venture Card is great for frequent travelers, offering the perfect combination of generous rewards and travel perks. Cardholders receive travel accident insurance and rental collision coverage, which many travelers pay extra for. Additionally, the card offers travel perks, including Hertz Elite status and elite-level benefits when staying at Lifestyle Collection properties.

Travel rewards beginners

If you’re new to points and miles, the various types of rewards and credit cards can be overwhelming. The Capital One Venture Card is a great way to diversify your rewards portfolio (via 19 transfer partners) without carrying multiple credit cards and tracking complicated reward categories. Both earning and redeeming are simplified, making it a great choice if you’re just getting started in the confusing world of travel rewards.

Family travelers

Families have less flexibility when it comes to redeeming points. They’re bound to the school calendar, with vacation days coinciding with high travel demand and low award availability. The Capital One Venture Card allows families to redeem their miles for any flight or hotel they want, with no blackout dates or limitations.

What real cardholders are saying

To help you get a better sense of whether this card is a good fit for you, we’ve collected feedback from real cardholders. Here’s what they’re saying about the Capital One Venture Card:

Positive experiences

  • Ease of redeeming miles: Capital One’s transfer partners provide outsized value for your miles if you utilize them correctly. According to one card reviewer on the Capital One site, “I had a specific airline credit card prior to this and it was difficult to book air reward miles because of blackout dates or finding a reward flight that coincided with a full fare flight that I needed for my family.” – Nanny21, Capital One website
  • Valuable transfer partners: Capital One’s transfer partners provide outsized value for your miles if you utilize them correctly. One Redditor explains, “Transferring to the Capital One travel partners is a big deal because you can get more value by doing that. The card can easily pay for itself with one good transfer.” – Gain_Spirited, Reddit
  • Good customer service and fraud protection: Capital One customers give the bank high marks for expedient customer service and handling of fraud issues. Having experienced this myself, I can vouch for this feedback: “The phone app…once instantly notified [me] when my card was compromised. My [card] was blocked, I was refunded the fraudulent charges, and could use the app’s digital card while I waited for my new card…Very happy with this card. It is my only credit card. – Petec2, Capital One website

Common complaints

For all its positive attributes, cardholders have a few common complaints regarding the Capital One Venture Card. Here are a few taken off the Capital One website and Reddit:

  • No lounge access: Capital One discontinued lounge access for Venture cardholders this year, and some customers are not happy about it. “The only thing that is unfortunate is the lack of ANY Capital One lounge access with this card. It would be great if even one complimentary lounge access per year were to be added to this card. Therefore, giving it a legitimate standing as a premium Capital One card.” – Vlad722 – March 27, 2025
  • The $95 annual fee may not be worth it: Some cardholders don’t find the Venture card earns enough rewards to offset the annual fee. “It has a $95 annual fee, which you’d need to spend about $5000 worth of 2x points just to even out. And it didn’t sound too ideal for me since I’m planning to travel once a year.” – Grx2l, Reddit
  • Capital One Travel’s rates aren’t always competitive: Venture cardholders receive a $250 credit and elevated rewards when booking through the Capital One portal. However, some customers complain that the portal’s hotel rates are sometimes higher than those on hotel websites. One Redditor found this out after booking a hotel through the site: “The next day, I found that the hotel’s actual website has the same room for 400 dollars less for the overall stay. I went back to Capital One Travel and asked for a price match…They denied my price match request.”

Other similar cards worth considering

While the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offers impressive value, it’s not the best fit for everyone. Depending on your budget, travel goals, and spending habits, you might be better off with one of the following cards:

Capital One Venture X Rewards Card

The Venture X is Capital One’s premium card, with similar benefits at a higher price point. Many Venture cardholders either consider the Venture X or eventually upgrade their existing cards to this premium version. That’s because the Venture X provides a $300 annual travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles (worth $100), easily offsetting the card’s $395 annual fee.

Venture X cardholders also receive unlimited Capital One and Priority Pass lounge visits (including access for two guests). Cardholders also earn an elevated 10X bonus on hotel and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, as well as 5X rewards on flights and vacation rentals reserved on the site. With superior travel protections and over $400 in annual perks, , you can offset the Venture X card’s annual fee more easily than the Venture Card’s.

Wells Fargo Autograph Card

The Wells Fargo Autograph Card is a solid alternative if you’re looking for a no-annual-fee card that earns more points on everyday spending. The card earns a very generous 3X points on six of the most common spending categories, making it easy to maximize every dollar spent. Qualifying categories include travel, restaurants (dining and delivery), gas and EV charging, popular streaming subscriptions, and transit (including rideshare, public transportation, parking, and tolls).

If most of your expenses fall within these categories, you earn more points with the Wells Fargo Autograph Card than the Capital One Venture. You can redeem your miles for either travel or cash back at one cent each. Alternatively, you can transfer your points to seven airline and hotel partners, five of which overlap with Capital One’s:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • Choice Privileges (transfers at a 1:2 ratio)

My Concluding Thoughts

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is one of the best travel rewards cards for both beginners and advanced point collectors. The card’s straightforward rewards structure and redemption options make it easy to earn and redeem miles. Whether you’re planning a big trip abroad or want to earn more miles on daily purchases, this card can help you achieve your goals faster.

That being said, the card may not be the best fit for everyone. If you’re not familiar with its international travel partners or most of your spending falls into travel and dining, you may want to explore other options. There are plenty of other credit cards that align better with your spending habits.

Key Takeaways

  • With 2X miles on all spending, this card is ideal for beginners in the travel rewards space or those seeking a simpler rewards program.
  • The welcome bonus offers exceptional value from the outset and there are lots of different ways to redeem it.
  • Thanks to ongoing perks and a reasonable annual fee, keeping the card long-term is easily justified. Alternately, there are options for either downgrading or upgrading the card if the benefits are no longer worth it.
  • Some folks might be better off applying for a Venture X card, which has over $400 in annual travel perks.
